Gas Prices are Higher
Oil prices have spiked over the recent days. This is an alert that if you’re low on gas, then fill your tank up now.
A few different reasons for this.
1. The cold snap. The cold weather means that more people are using energy. This reduces the supply. Also weather can cause local supply disruptions… trucks can’t make their deliveries.
2. Reduced inventory.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I think that $3.00 gallon is again possible.

We’re keeping it short and sweet this week because our sister was in a car accident last week and broke her hip. She has a 4 month old and we’ve been helping to take care of him.
Last night we had tornado warnings most of the night, it has rained for a week (and I do really miss the sun :o))… but we are all safe / sound.
Please keep her (Dawn) in your thoughts and prayers.

Answers to the Quiz
Here are the answers to the quiz from Friday. Don’t forget to vote tomorrow. Like my Dad says if you don’t vote then you can’t complain.
1. Next week the $$ remains strong and gains ground in many currencies. The price of oil would…
Decrease. Oil is priced in $$ and with a strong one then we get more bang for our bucks.
2. The stock market continues it’s slump and bad news comes every day. Oil prices would most likely …
Decrease. The stock market reflects the economy - with a down economy people will use less oil.
3. Opec decides to cut production… normally this would make oil prices ….
Increase. Less supply would normally mean an increase of prices… although lately this hasn’t worked out very well for OPEC.
4. Long range forecasts are out. The winter will be a bad one. This news would usually make oil prices…
Increase. More demand for fuels for fuel would equal less oil that could be made into gas.
5. Who do we import most of our oil from….
If you guessed Saudia Arabia you would be wrong. We import the most oil from Canada.
Have a wonderful Monday.

++ News -
The big news over the weekend is of course Hurricane Ike. We noticed a spike in Gas prices and rumors of a ’shortage’ here yesterday and there were lines at the gas pumps and even some fights were started. I would just like to mention that the US has a huge petroleum reserve for cases when the gas supply gets short. I don’t think we’ll have any severe shortages, just a glitch or two as things get lined out.
Price for a barrel of oil fell briefly yesterday to below $100 barrel but rebounded a bit at the end of the day. That was even with Hurricane Ike… so my prediction is after hurricane season they will fall even further. Next week we’ll talk some about the Hurricane season.
Found this link yesterday which is like a Hurricane situation room with news and live feeds.

Ike has forced some shutdown of Refinery Capacity. Details can be found here.
++ The Oil Industry - Domestic Supply - Alaska
This week we’re going to talk about Alaska oil supplies. Unless you’ve been living under a rock somewhere you’ve heard the debate about drilling in Alaska.
We talked about the oil that comes from Alaska some last week but the controversy is drilling in the Arctic Refuge. The Arctic National Wildlife reserve (ANWR) consists of almost 20 million acres of the Northern Alaska Coast. The controversy is between getting the oil and disrupting the environment and the habitats of the animals.
I’m not going to take sides on this, but hopefully will give you an idea of the controversy.
The Environment
The argument here is that the disruption of Eco systems and habitats would not be worth the amount of oil that would be obtained from drilling there. Reports say that oil production from there would have minimal impact on oil prices. There is also a fear that there would be oil spills. Everyone remembers the Valdez.
The Oil Reserves
It is estimated that drilling in the ANWR and surrounding areas would produce an estimated 10.4 Billion (yep that is Billion) barrels of oil. Without actually drilling there this is a rough guess. The estimated amount of oil still in the US is 120 billion barrels of oil. So ANWR constitutes roughly 10% of the US reserves.
So what are your thoughts, make sure to leave a comment and let us know.
You can find much more information (including arguments for the pros and cons here). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arctic_Refuge_drilling_controversy
Saving you Money
Short and Sweet this week. We’ve mentioned coupons. Here are a couple of different ways to get additional coupons.
1. When you see an advertisement on T.V., note the URL with the advertisement. Sometimes they will provide a coupon at the website.
2. Do a search for the coupon your looking for on Google - we did this the last time we bought a Dell computer and saved about $400.

If you haven’t had a chance to buy our gas mileage guide we would encourage you to do so.
you can find it here. Thanks so much for sharing your day with us and we hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Gas News and Tidbits for Tuesday
Crude oil continued a decline yesterday (which is good news for gas prices). The main reason being that Hurricane Gustav didn’t have a huge impact on the Gulf oil production. A good read if you’re interested in finding out how it shut down things in the Gulf can be found here.

Hurricane Gustav
Looks like Gustav will definitely hit the gulf, which means there will be some disruption in the oil supply. The off shore wells account for about 1/4 of the oil produced in the U.S. There has been some rebuilding / remodeling going on lately, here’s hoping that the storm weakens (or I should say doesn’t strengthen as it is supposed to). Oil prices are still trading at around $115 a barrel.

Oil prices up - OPEC meeting in Sept.
Oil prices were up yesterday to about $116.00 a barrel. This was mostly due to a drop in supply and some speculation on what’s going to happen in the OPEC meeting in Sept. We’ll be talking about OPEC in our newsletter on Saturday. Enjoy your day!

Remember it’s the little bits that add up
In the guide we talk about how making small changes can make a big difference.
I had driven to my parents house to take my Mom a computer that I wasn’t using anymore. I called Lisa to tell her that I had made it and she mentioned that she had some prescriptions at CVS. When I got home, she mentioned the prescriptions again so I ended up going to get them.
If I had thought about it some I should have picked up the prescriptions on the way home - that would have saved me about a gallon or so of gas. I know that a gallon doesn’t seem like much but if I save a gallon every day… in a year thats 365 (and at $3.80/ gallon thats almost $1400).
So just remember that small changes can make a huge difference.
