Finding something to sled in the snow
Out of Gas Newsletter - Issue 70 January 30, 2010

++ News -
We got about six inches of snow today. It’s not very good to make snowballs with, but it is very nice to sleigh ride on. Today’s update is a little
short, because we’ll be out playing in the snow.
++++++++++
If you get in a bind and don’t happen to have a sled, here are some ideas you can use to sleigh ride (and they’re all things you can find at your house).
1. The good ole plastic bag. The black garbage bags (like hefty) work best. Just sit on top of them (not in them). You may need a couple of runs to work
the kinks out but this works really well.
2. A rug - just don’t get one of those skid proof ones.
3. A garbage can lid - the bigger the better. The curved ones work the best, as well as ones that don’t have a handle / grip in the middle / top of the
lid.
If you’re thinking of buying a sled - the best time to do this is at the end of the winter season.
Have a wonderful time this weekend, we will.

Fun with Pumpkins
With Halloween just around the corner, a fun (cheap) activity to do this weekend would be to carve pumpkins.
Hopefully this will help you get started.
1. Carving Pumpkins - some great detail on the art of carving and taking care of pumpkins can be found here.

2. Stencils for pumpkins - don’t pay for them, there are a ton of places where you can find them for free…. and who doesn’t like free.

5 Things to do this weekend that won’t cost you a dime.
1. Go for a nature hike / walk (if it’s not bad weather).
2. It it is bad weather, take a trip down memory lane by pulling out the videos of your kids when they were small.
3. Break out the monopoly board.
4. Tons of football games on this weekend. Pick sides and cheer for your team.
5. Make a game out of doing some fall clean up around the house.
Most of all spend some time with your family. Some of your kids best memories will be of the time you spent with them ‘goofing off’.

Playing Fantasy Football
We got several notes about playing fantasy football from our Saturday Newsletter. Several people were interested but didn’t know how to play.
Here are some sites that should be able to help you out some with that.

Updates on Fun Things to do for Less Money
Starting today the X-box has decreased in price by $100. The Elite is now priced at $299. The 60 Gig is going to be phased out and will be available for $249.00 whilce supplies last. You can find some additional information about that here.
You can save money on any game system you have by getting together with some friends and “sharing” the games. After all there are only so many times you can play a game before you get tired of it. Figure out the games that you want, split them up, and buy half (or a third or even a fourth). Then play the games for a few weeks and then rotate. One other way to save some cash is to rent the game so that you know that you will enjoy it (before spending money on it).
Football season is FINALLY here. You can catch local high-school games usually for less than 5 bucks or so for a ticket. Fantasy football is a great way to enjoy football with your friends and family. Fox has some unique spins on the game. You can find out more information about that here.

Saving Money on a night out
Here is an interesting way to save on a night out on the town (on the food bill anyway).
1. Go to http://www.restaurant.com
2. Enter your zip code
You should now see a list of restaurants in your area. You can either buy a $10 gift certificate for $3.00 or a $25 certificate for $10. Print out the certificate and enjoy your discounted meal.
Note: Be careful to read the fine print when you’re choosing the place you want to eat at. There may be a minimum amount, there could be a tip automatically added, a restriction on when you can eat (or what you can eat). Just make sure to read it.
A good example would be this:
For “Clouds cooking” I can get a $25 certificate for $10 bucks.
I will need to spend $35 and dine in only. My $35 meal costs me $25… so I saved 10 bucks.
Enjoy your Friday!

Your personalized DJ … for free.
I saw this tip in the latest issue of barrons. Pandora is an internet radio site that personlizes your playlists based on music that you ‘like’. I’ve been using it for a few days and I must say that it does an excellent job in figuring out your music tastes. As you listen for a bit you need to rate the songs (thumbs up or down), it then adjusts the playlist to how you rated the song. Excellent quality as well… and did I mention that it is free. Enjoy your Friday and Rock On!!
Here’s the site - http://www.pandora.com/
You could save some money by ditching the satellite radio if you only use it around your house and have a good set of speakers (or headphones) for your computer.

Would you throw out the dish and cable for free TV - OOG

Saving Money on Your Cable Bill
This issue brought to you by
Saving Money The Nitty Gritty - Can you get rid of the tv cable and dish.
I know this week that we were supposed to continue to talk about saving money on cars but one of my friends announced recently on facebook that he is ditching his direct tv package.
I started thinking about this… after all if you spend $100 / month on your cable bill that could add up to $1200 for the year. So I did some research on it.
Before You Cut the Cord -
1. In order for you to cut the cord, make sure that you have a reliable internet connection. If you have cable internet (especially if you have a plan that saves money based on the number of services you have) find out how that canceling your tv would change your bill.
2. You will need to have some way of getting internet to your television. It would be no fun watching tv in your easy chair on your laptop. Below are a couple of articles on how you can do that.
http://www.seanpaune.com/2008/02/16/how-to-watch-internet-videos-on-your-tv/
3. You can find live feeds of just about everything - however local programming may be delayed (ie you would watch episodes when they are available on the internet - usually that is the next day. News you can usually get live from the stations website. Other local programming (daytime) you may have a hard time finding so if you have any shows you really enjoy, make sure you are able to get them before cutting the cord.
My suggestion would be that before you do it, you pretend that you don’t have cable for a week to see if you miss it or not.
Places to Find Programming - below are just some of the places to find things on the internet. Do your research and you can find just about anything.
Finding shows that you will like / enjoy.
Here is a list of lists - places you can find tv shows / movies etc.
