Amazon’s Black Friday Week - No Phising
Amazon has unveiled details on their black friday week. Although we’re a little late today (Mondays are always busy) - we’ll work on putting up some details every morning. The page can be found here.
I’ve already gotten some good deals today.
If you need a laptop Black Friday ads details on how you can pick a very nice one from HP for less than a grand.
Don’t know if I’ve mentioned this but always when shopping online make sure to take shipping into the equation.
Phishing -
You know you’ve gotten an email that says it is from a bank… really it is someone, usually from a foreign country that is trying to take your account information… here are a few tips on how to combat it.
1. Go to the banking / credit card sites that you normally use (make sure to type in the url). Bookmark those pages. Now if you get a suspicious email - don’t click on the site from the email but use your bookmark instead.
2. Use Firefox as a browser - they have built in phising protection.
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/phishing-protection/
3. Never click on a link from your email (never ever).
4. Don’t believe any claims that are too good to be true - I’m sure your mother’s uncle’s cousin’s nephew did not leave you a bajillion dollars… no matter how much you wish they had.
Have a wonderful day!

Black Friday Reviews
Are you ready for black friday. This will be a review for most of you but we may have some new folks in the crowd. Here are the steps to get the most bang for you buck.
1. Organize your list of what you want to buy…. if you have only a general idea for a gift then make a note of that. The best way to do that is by creating a spread sheet.
2. Check out the Black Friday ads - my favorite is -
If you find one of the items in your list make a note of it. Also most stores will accept their competitors ad (there are some restrictions with this so make sure you call the store first to make sure - one restriction some have is they will accept the ad only during the time period the ad is for).
Make notes as to when each store opens and when the ad is available.
Now is the time to decide if you’re going to be shopping online or at the store. Generally deals start online at the same time as deals do in the store.
3. Plan your route, if you’re going to shop at the stores.
4. IMPORTANT - early (an hour or so before you have to leave to shop) - make sure to check out Amazon. Last year I was planning on a trip to Wal-Mart, but found everything I needed (cheaper) than Wal-Mart and much less hassle.
Have a wonderful weekend.

Keeping computer viruses away part 2
There are a couple of different programs that you should have on your computer. One is a virus checker and the other is a malware protection program. I haven’t experienced (yet) a program that can do both well.
Virus Checkers -
Probably the most popular ‘free’ virus checker is AVG - you can find details for that here.
http://free.avg.com/us-en/homepage
We use the paid version. I have used all the major programs and I tend to like AVG the most because it doesn’t hog your system resources.
I looked for a non biased comparison of the various programs, but I didn’t have much luck.
For Malware and Spyware we use Spybot Search and destroy which you can find here -
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html
One IMPORTANT note - when downloading either of those free programs you will be taken to a download page. Those pages have advertising. Be careful ‘not’ to click on an ad, but click on the actual download.
No matter what you choose for your software, it will do no good unless you keep it updated and schedule a scan for infections.
